Lavender Hair Bath Refresher

This is one of the MANY ways that I wash my hair. This post does not suggest that this is the correct way to wash your hair. I am not a licensed stylist but have been a life long diy hair styler. This works for me and my hair is healthy and grows like crazy. I don't obsess over hair products. I am not that lady that stand in the aisle for hours debating on what product to use for multi-textures of hair. In fact, being a homesteader, I seldomly shop in stores at all. I like to use whatever is in my homestead. Sometimes I use other ingredients and will share when I use other techniques. For today, this is what I have available in my homestead. I even used these techniques (minus the towel rub) before dreadlocks. I cannot speak on using this combination on permed hair. My hair is over 10 years chemical-free.

The first thing I do is draw a "bath" in my deep kitchen sink. Add 1 & 1/2 cups of baking soda and stir. Add a few drops of the castle liquid soap (about a tablespoon). I premix my olive oil and lavender oils for several purposes. I personally love the smell of lavender but you can use whatever essential oil that suits you. Eucalyptus and lemon grass oil is great for rejuvenating an itchy scalp. I don't usually have itchy scalp so lavender is perfect for me. Sometimes I use tea tree oil mix as well. Also for the base oil, I find that my hair and skin works very well with olive oil. Some people live by coconut oil. Either oil mixture will work for this purpose. You can use as much or as little as you like depending on if you have dry or oily hair. Lastly, I pour about a third cup of dried lavender flowers in a towel and seal it like a satchel using a rubber band and let it float in the water. I basically use this for added fragrance and squeeze the satchel from time to time. You can purchase dried lavender flowers on Amazon or dry your own. I am growing lavender and will be drying some (that will be another blog) but this Feel Good Organic brand works well for me in an instant.

After all the ingredients are stirred into the "bath", I soak my hair as close to my scalp as I can for about 10 min. After the 10 min. I use the towel to ensure that all of the edges get coated with the mixture. Some people have problems with caked on hair products caught in the base of the dreadlocks from twisting and styling. To help remedy this, I gently squeeze the towel around those problem dreadlocks to force out the dirt. The towel will feel a bit slimy but it works for me. Do this as gently as possible though. The entire process of the hair bath takes me 20 to 25 minutes. If you like to have a lather, you can use a few drops of you favorite shampoo to lather into your hair after you soak. SEE HOW MURKY THE WATER IS WHEN YOU ARE DONE!

Drain the water and rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water. Once rinsed, I use more of my olive/lavendar oil mixture to condition my hair from root to tip. Wrap your hair in a towel or soft cloth for about 30 min and when you remove the towel, you will smell magic!!! Ahhhhh, the fresh smell of lavendar!!!! You can proceed from here with your regular dreadlock maintenance. Like, comment, share and let me know what you think!!
