Now I must admit that it took me some time to really get acquainted and to trust this deodorant. The more I used it (for about two weeks), the more my body became adjusted to it. Now I find that store-bought deodorants are not as effective for me anymore. It's been about three years now since I have used this formula. It helps to keep my underarm skin even and it is soothing after shaving. After all, you've got to love your underarms because it is skin too! Why leave them dry and discolored. This formula helps me to keep my underarms looking and smelling pretty.

DISCLAIMERS: As always, please be sure to read the disclaimers at the very bottom of the page.I strongly suggest that you always keep your commercial deodorant handy for those really hot day days on the beach or at the pool. I would also be careful with using this homemade formula with your expensive clothes or delicate fabrics (silks mostly). After all, it contains oils that might stain your fabric. For me, it works fine with whatever I wear for formal wear, dressing up, business, casual, or working out. If you have problems with excessive underarm sweating, then this formula definitely will not work for you.

First off, here is an image of all the ingredients you will need. Your favorite essential oils (for adding scent), baking soda, corn starch, 100% natural shea butter or cocoa butter (I have shea butter here), deodorant containers (I order from amazon for $5), and (2) 16 oz styrofoam cups (in case you have overflow) or any container you like. The 16 oz cup size fills all five of my bottles completely.

Start by scooping out your shea butter with a spoon. It should be easy to loosen up to add to the cup.

Fill the cup as if you are scooping ice cream. Add enough loose amount of shea butter to where you think it will become about half cup once it is melted. Half (or just slightly more than half) cup of melted butter will be all you need.

Heat in the microwave for about 1 minute. Stir and heat for an additional 30 seconds if there's not enough liquid to work with. It is okay and best that there are a couple of lumps of unmelted shea butter.

Add 1 cup of baking soda and 3/4 cup of cornstarch. Work quickly and stir the mixture until smooth and it has the consistency of a milkshake. This mixture should fill your cup to the very top. This is where you can use the other cup to split the mix if needed and then recombine after stirring.

You can see the final consistency is smooth. Now add about 15 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil for fragrance. I added about 15 drops of lavender and 4 drops lemongrass oils. Remember to work quickly because you don't want this to get too solid on you or you will need to rewarm it. Stir in the essential oils so that it mixes with the entire batch. Another idea is you can use additional cups and make different scents if you prefer. Rewarm the batch if needed.

Slowly and neatly pour the mixture into the deodorant containers. Fill each to the rim as shown.

Excuse my dirty freezer :). But place the containers in the freezer for about 20 minutes. Remove the containers after 20 minutes and wait about another hour before using! Be sure to store these in a cool place. I keep mine in the bathroom and refrigerate from time to time if it becomes too hot and humid for too long. You will find that you don't need much of this deodorant under each arm for it to take effect! Hope you enjoy and hope this works for you!

This is what the final product looks like once it is solid.
